Italo Disco Will Never Die is a project that aims to make a contemporary audience rediscover lost music gems from the past. My interest in Italian disco music from the 80s started this project. Choosing the best Italo tracks and studying how music branding has changed in the digital era, I designed a series of animated album covers reinterpreting the 80s aesthetic created by Fiorucci and Memphis designers. Piece for the ‘Go Bananas! A Cultural Melting Point’ exhibition by ninegsm at Stanley Picker Gallery, London.

Visiting London I’m always amazed by the number of people still wearing their traditional costumes in their daily life. For my exhibition piece, I wanted to portray the traditional costumes from my country, Italy, in a contemporary and multicultural context. In particular, I’ve chosen to reinterpret the costumes from Val Chisone and Val Mastallone in Piedmont. In the final outcome two ‘Barotti’ girls pose at the Barbican Centre. ‘Barotti’ is an Italian offensive term which describes clumsy country people who don’t fit in the big city. Here the clothes are reinterpreted and combined with modern accessories to create a new fresh style.

With this illustration I wanted to let people know that patterns are not simple decorations but symbols that carry meaning and history. I’ve found interesting how the houndstooth pattern has different names in every country according to what it resembles most. The name derives from the check resemblance to the back teeth of a hound. In France, it’s called pied de poule referencing the shape of bird’s feet while in Japan it’s called with the word Chidori (千鳥) that means "a thousand birds" or "plover".
